What Is an EFB Battery (for Commercial Vehicles)?

TL;DR — EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) is a step up from standard flooded lead-acid: it adds carbon-enhanced plates and a polyester scrim separator for better charge acceptance and cycle life. It sits between flooded and AGM in both performance and price.

EFB vs Standard Flooded vs AGM

Specification SLI (Flooded) EFB AGM
Technology Flooded lead-acid Enhanced flooded Absorbent Glass Mat
Cycle life @ 25°C 200–300 400–600 600–1200
Charge acceptance 1.0× 1.5–2.0× SLI 2.5–3.5× SLI
Start-stop compatible No Yes (entry-level) Yes (full)
Relative cost 1.0× 1.3–1.5× 1.8–2.2×

When to Choose EFB

  • Entry-level start-stop systems — where standard flooded is not durable enough
  • Mid-tier commercial vehicles — needing better cycle life than flooded without AGM's cost
  • Higher electrical loads — better charge acceptance for modern vehicles

When to Choose Something Else

  • Conventional, gentle duty — standard flooded is sufficient and cheapest
  • Demanding, high-vibration, cold-climate — AGM's superior performance justifies its cost
