TL;DR — For cold-climate and arctic trucks, choose the highest CCA in your group size (900–1100+ for heavy trucks) and consider AGM for the most reliable cold starts. Cold reduces battery output exactly when the engine needs more cranking power.
Why Cold Is Hard on Batteries¶
Cold does three things at once: it slows the battery's chemical reaction (less available current), thickens engine oil (more cranking effort), and increases electrical demand (glow plugs, heaters). The result is a battery that is weakest when the engine needs the most.

- Keep the battery fully charged — a discharged battery freezes more easily
- Use the right oil viscosity — lighter winter oil reduces cranking effort
- Insulate the battery box where practical
