Calcium vs Antimony Lead-Acid for Trucks¶
TL;DR — Calcium-calcium (Ca-Ca) grids give low water loss and self-discharge, ideal for low-maintenance conventional batteries. Lead-antimony (Pb-Sb) grids tolerate vibration and deeper cycling better, which is why heavy-duty truck batteries often use them.
What the Grid Alloy Does¶
In a lead-acid battery, the grid is the metal lattice that holds the active material and conducts current. The alloy used changes the battery's behavior:

Calcium-Calcium (Ca-Ca)¶
- Pros — low water loss, low self-discharge, low maintenance
- Cons — less tolerant of deep discharge and vibration than antimony
- Best for — conventional vehicles with healthy charging systems
Lead-Antimony (Pb-Sb)¶
- Pros — robust against vibration, better deep-cycle tolerance
- Cons — higher water consumption, higher self-discharge
- Best for — heavy-duty trucks, buses, generators
