AGM vs Flooded for Heavy-Duty Trucks

TL;DR — AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries outperform flooded lead-acid in vibration resistance, cold-start reliability, cycle life and charge acceptance, but cost roughly 1.8–2.2× more. For demanding heavy-duty duty cycles, AGM often pays for itself; for standard conventional use, flooded remains the economical choice.

How They Differ

  • Flooded lead-acid — liquid electrolyte with lead plates. Proven, low-cost, the workhorse of conventional vehicles.
  • AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) — the electrolyte is absorbed into a glass mat separator, making the battery sealed, spill-proof and vibration-resistant.
Specification SLI (Flooded) AGM
Cycle life @ 25°C 200–300 cycles 600–1200 cycles
Charge acceptance Standard (1.0×) 2.5–3.5× SLI
Vibration resistance Moderate High
Maintenance Low (Ca-Ca) Maintenance-free
Cold-crank reliability Good Better
Relative cost 1.0× baseline 1.8–2.2×

When to Choose AGM

  • High-vibration applications — off-highway, mining, construction
  • Cold / Arctic climates — where reliable cold starts matter most
  • Start-stop vehicles — AGM handles frequent restarts better
  • Premium fleets — where downtime costs outweigh the battery price premium

When Flooded Is Enough

  • Standard long-haul duty with healthy charging systems
  • Hot climates where capacity (Ah) matters more than CCA
  • Budget-sensitive fleets replacing batteries on a regular schedule

Cost vs Life: The Simple Math

AGM costs roughly twice a flooded battery but typically offers roughly double the cycle life and better reliability. In applications where a flooded battery is stressed (vibration, cold, frequent starts), AGM's longer service life can offset its higher price. In gentle duty cycles, flooded remains the better value.
