Batteries for Mining & Off-Highway Equipment¶
TL;DR — Mining and off-highway equipment subjects batteries to extreme vibration, dust, temperature swings and deep cycling. Choose rugged heavy-duty batteries with strong vibration resistance — AGM is often the best fit for its sealed, vibration-tolerant design.
The Harshest Duty Cycle¶
Off-highway equipment faces conditions that quickly destroy ordinary batteries:
- Extreme vibration — damages plates and causes internal shorts
- Dust and debris — contaminates and corrodes
- Temperature extremes — from freezing nights to hot engine bays
- Deep cycling — frequent starts and heavy loads
Technology Choice¶
| Technology | Suitability for off-highway |
|---|---|
| Flooded (heavy-duty) | Good with robust Pb-Sb construction |
| AGM | Best — sealed, vibration-resistant, maintenance-free |
| EFB | Mid-tier, for lighter off-highway duty |
AGM is often the preferred choice for mining and off-highway because its absorbent glass mat construction resists vibration and it is fully sealed against dust and spillage.
Selection Criteria¶
- Group size — match the equipment's battery tray (JIS N150/N200 or equivalent)
- CCA — match the engine's cranking requirement (large diesels need 850–1100+ CCA)
- Vibration resistance — prioritize rugged construction
- Sealed design — protect against dust and tilt
Maintenance in Harsh Environments¶
- Inspect hold-down brackets frequently (vibration loosens them)
- Keep terminals clean — dust accelerates corrosion
- Load-test regularly — harsh conditions shorten life
- Check charging — off-highway alternators work hard
