How to Test a Truck Battery¶

Q: How do I test a truck battery with a multimeter?

With the engine off, a healthy 12V battery reads about 12.6–12.8V at rest. Below 12.4V indicates partial discharge; below 12.0V is deeply discharged. A multimeter shows voltage, but a load test is needed to confirm CCA capacity.

A load test applies a controlled load and measures how the battery holds voltage under load. It is the most reliable way to confirm whether a battery can still deliver its rated CCA.

Test 1: Resting Voltage (Multimeter)¶

With the engine off (and after any surface charge has settled), measure across the terminals:

24V systems

Double these figures — a healthy 24V pair reads about 25.2–25.6V at rest.

Test 2: Running Voltage (Alternator Check)¶

Start the engine and measure again. A healthy 12V system should read 13.8–14.4V, proving the alternator is charging. Below ~13.5V suggests the alternator is not keeping up.

Test 3: Load Test (CCA Confirmation)¶

A load tester applies a controlled load (typically half the CCA rating) for ~15 seconds and measures how the battery holds voltage. This is the definitive test — it confirms whether the battery can actually deliver its rated cold cranking amps.

Interpreting the Results¶
