How to Read a Truck Battery Datasheet¶

Q: What does Ah mean on a battery?

Ah (ampere-hours) is the battery's capacity — how much current it can deliver over time. A 135Ah battery can theoretically deliver 135A for one hour (or 6.75A for 20 hours). It measures energy storage, not starting power.

Q: What is the difference between CCA and CA?

CCA (cold cranking amps) is measured at −18°C (0°F); CA (cranking amps) is measured at a warmer 0°C (32°F). CA is always a higher number than CCA for the same battery.

Q: What is RC (reserve capacity)?

Reserve capacity is how many minutes a battery can deliver 25A before dropping below 10.5V — essentially how long it can run essential loads if the alternator fails.

Q: What do the terminal codes mean?

Common terminals include SAE posts (A or D type), JIS posts (T1/T2 conical), and stud terminals. The code tells you the shape and size — it must match your vehicle's cables.

Q: What dimensions matter on a datasheet?

Length, width and height, plus terminal type and polarity (left-positive or right-positive). These must match your battery tray and cable reach exactly.

TL;DR — A battery datasheet is a spec sheet: Ah is energy capacity, CCA is cold-start power, RC is reserve capacity, and the terminal type + polarity + dimensions determine whether it fits your truck. Reading all of them correctly prevents a costly wrong purchase.

Decoding the Common Ratings¶

Rating	What it answers
CCA	"Will it start my truck in the cold?"
Ah	"How much energy does it hold?"
RC	"How long will it run essentials if the alternator dies?"

Compare like-for-like

CCA values differ by test standard (SAE, EN, DIN, JIS). A battery rated "870 A EN" cannot be directly compared to one rated "870 CCA SAE" — the test conditions differ.

Example: Reading a DINWEY Datasheet¶

A DINWEY 190H52 (N200) datasheet shows:

This tells you it is a large, high-capacity, high-CCA battery for heavy trucks — but you must still confirm the 520×278×220mm footprint and terminal orientation fit your vehicle.

The One Mistake to Avoid¶

The most common datasheet mistake is focusing only on CCA and ignoring dimensions and polarity. A high-CCA battery that does not fit the tray or has reversed polarity is unusable. Check all fields, not just the headline number.
