What Is CCA & How Much Does a Diesel Truck Need?¶
TL;DR — Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) measures a battery's cold-start power: the amps it can deliver for 30 seconds at −18°C while staying above 7.2V. Diesel trucks need more CCA than gasoline vehicles — typically 600–800 for light trucks, 800–1000 for medium-duty, and 850–1100+ for heavy semis. Match CCA to your engine and climate.
What CCA Measures¶
CCA is the industry-standard way to compare cold-start performance. The test is defined by standards bodies (SAE J537 in North America, EN 50342-1 in Europe, JIS D5301 in Japan):
- Cool the battery to −18°C (0°F)
- Discharge it at a specified current for 30 seconds
- The battery must stay above 7.2V (for a 12V battery)
Standard-to-standard temperature difference
SAE J537 and EN 50342-1 test at −18°C, but JIS D5301 tests at −15°C. Because JIS tests at a warmer temperature, a JIS CCA figure is not directly comparable to an SAE or EN figure. Always compare CCA within the same standard.
The higher the CCA, the more current the battery can deliver in cold conditions — which is exactly when an engine is hardest to crank and the battery is weakest.
Why Diesel Engines Need More CCA¶
Diesel engines use compression ignition, with compression ratios roughly double those of gasoline engines. This means:
- The starter motor must turn the engine against much higher resistance
- Cold engine oil is thicker, adding more resistance
- The starter draws more current as a result
So a diesel truck needs a materially higher CCA rating than a gasoline vehicle of comparable size.

CCA and Ah measure different things. A battery can have high CCA but modest capacity, or vice versa — do not confuse the two.
How Climate Changes the Math¶
- Cold climates — CCA is the primary concern. Choose the highest CCA in your group size, and consider AGM for the most reliable cold starts.
- Hot climates — CCA is less critical. Focus on capacity (Ah) and heat tolerance, since heat accelerates battery aging.
