Batteries for Semi-Trailers & Heavy Haulers

TL;DR — Semi-trailer trucks use 24V systems (two 12V batteries in series) with high CCA (850–1100+) to crank large diesel engines. Always replace the pair together and match the group size to your market (JIS N200/N150 or DIN100/DIN88).

The Semi Truck Electrical System

Semi trucks are the largest road-going commercial vehicles, and their electrical systems reflect that:

Component Specification
System voltage 24V (two 12V in series)
CCA requirement 850–1100+ CCA
JIS market models 190H52 (N200), 145G51 (N150)
DIN market models 60038 (DIN100), 58827 (DIN88)

Why 24V?

A 24V system halves the current for the same power, which:

  • Allows thinner, lighter wiring
  • Reduces voltage drop over long cable runs
  • Provides more reliable cranking of the large diesel engine

Battery Selection for Semi Trucks

  1. Match the group size — N200/N150 in JIS markets, DIN100/DIN88 in European markets
  2. Match the CCA — 850–1100+ depending on engine and climate
  3. Replace in pairs — always replace both 24V batteries together
  4. Consider AGM — for high-vibration or cold-climate duty

The Pair Replacement Rule

In a 24V system, the two batteries charge and discharge together. If you replace only one, the new battery works against the aged one, causing imbalance and shortening life. Always replace both as a matched pair.
