CCA Requirements by Truck Class

TL;DR — CCA needs scale with vehicle class: light diesel trucks need ~600–800 CCA, medium-duty ~800–1000, and heavy semis ~850–1100+. Cold climates push you to the top of the range. Always confirm the exact figure in your manual.

CCA by Truck Class

Truck class Fuel Typical CCA range (guidance)
Light truck / pickup Gasoline 400–600 CCA
Light truck / pickup Diesel 600–800 CCA
Medium-duty truck Diesel 800–1000 CCA
Heavy-duty / semi Diesel 850–1100+ CCA

Guidance only

These are general ranges for planning. The authoritative CCA requirement is in your vehicle manual and on the original battery label.

Why Diesel Needs More

Diesel engines use compression ignition with much higher compression ratios than gasoline engines. The starter must work harder, drawing more current — so diesel trucks need materially higher CCA.

Climate Adjustment

Climate CCA guidance
Hot / tropical Lower end of range; focus on capacity (Ah) and heat tolerance
Temperate Mid-range
Cold / arctic Upper end of range; consider AGM
