How Many Amps to Jump-Start a Semi Truck¶
TL;DR — A semi truck's starter can draw several hundred amps. Use heavy-duty jumper cables (2 AWG or thicker) rated for 400–600+ amps and a heavy-duty jump source. Never jump a 24V system from a 12V source directly.
The Starting Current¶
A large diesel engine's starter can draw several hundred amps during cranking — far more than a passenger car. This means:
- Jumper cables must be heavy-gauge (2 AWG or thicker) and rated for 400–600+ amps
- The jump source must be able to deliver that current — another running heavy vehicle, or a heavy-duty jump pack rated for large diesels
12V vs 24V Jump-Starting¶

Do not jump 24V from 12V
Connecting a 24V system to a 12V source (or vice versa) can damage both electrical systems. Match the voltage.
Safe Jump-Start Procedure¶
- Match voltage — confirm both systems are the same voltage
- Connect positive to positive — dead battery positive first
- Connect negative to a ground — a clean metal point on the dead vehicle, not the battery negative terminal (reduces spark risk)
- Start the donor, then the dead vehicle
- Disconnect in reverse order — ground first, then positives
Choosing a Jump Pack¶
For a semi truck, use a heavy-duty jump pack rated for large diesel engines. Standard automotive jump packs are usually insufficient — check the peak amps and diesel rating.
