Truck Battery Selection Guide¶

Q: What is the first thing to check when choosing a truck battery?

The group size. It must match your battery tray and cable reach, or the battery cannot be safely installed regardless of its electrical rating.

Q: How do I find my truck's group size?

Read the code printed on your existing battery (for example N150, DIN100, or Group 31) or check your vehicle manual.

Q: Should I buy the highest CCA available?

Not necessarily. Match CCA to your engine and climate. Higher CCA helps in cold climates, but it also means a larger, heavier, more expensive battery.

Q: Do I need to account for terminal orientation?

Yes. JIS batteries are typically right-positive and DIN batteries left-positive. The terminal type and position must match your cables.

Q: Can I replace a battery with a higher Ah rating?

Usually yes, if the group size, voltage and terminal orientation match. Higher Ah gives more reserve capacity, but ensure it physically fits and the charging system can maintain it.

TL;DR — Choose a truck battery in four steps: (1) confirm the group size, (2) check the cold cranking amp (CCA) requirement, (3) verify the electrical system voltage (12V or 24V), and (4) account for climate. Getting the group size and CCA wrong is the #1 cause of fleet breakdowns.

Step 1: Confirm the Group Size¶

The group size is the physical footprint and terminal layout of the battery. It must match your vehicle's battery tray and cable reach.

Step 2: Check the CCA Requirement¶

Cold cranking amps (CCA) measures a battery's ability to start an engine in cold temperatures. Diesel engines need more CCA than gasoline engines of the same size.

Medium-duty truck	800–1000 CCA
Heavy-duty / semi	850–1100+ CCA

These are general ranges. The exact CCA requirement is printed in your vehicle manual and on the original battery label.

Step 3: Verify the System Voltage¶

12V — light trucks and pickups
24V — heavy trucks, semi trailers and buses (two 12V batteries in series)

Step 4: Account for Climate¶

Colder climates require higher CCA. In extreme cold, consider AGM batteries, which perform better at low temperatures than flooded lead-acid.
