How Long Does a Truck Battery Last?¶

The Factors That Shorten Life¶
- Heat — the single biggest aging factor. High temperatures accelerate internal corrosion.
- Vibration — loose hold-downs cause plate damage and internal shorts.
- Deep discharge — draining the battery below ~50% repeatedly reduces cycle life.
- Overcharging — cooks the electrolyte and damages plates.
- Low state of charge — a battery left partially discharged sulfates and loses capacity.
How to Extend Truck Battery Life¶
- Keep it charged — a full state of charge prevents sulfation.
- Secure against vibration — check hold-down brackets regularly.
- Clean and tighten terminals — corrosion adds resistance.
- Avoid deep discharges — don't run accessories with the engine off.
- Load-test annually — catch a weak battery before it fails.
When to Replace Proactively¶
For fleet reliability, consider replacing batteries at the 3–5 year mark, or sooner if they fail a load test. The cost of a proactive replacement is far lower than a roadside breakdown.
