Truck Battery Shipping & Transport Rules

TL;DR — Lead-acid batteries are classified dangerous goods (UN2794 wet; UN2800 non-spillable for AGM/VRLA). They ship regularly by sea under the IMDG Code with correct packing and documentation. AGM batteries that meet the non-spillable criteria are the simplest to transport.

Dangerous Goods Classification

Truck starting batteries are lead-acid, which the UN system classifies as dangerous goods:

UN number Description Typical battery
UN2794 Batteries, wet, filled with acid Standard flooded SLI
UN2800 Batteries, wet, non-spillable AGM / VRLA (when tests pass)

Why it matters

UN2800 (non-spillable) batteries are simpler and cheaper to ship because they are exempt from some of the more onerous wet-battery requirements — one reason AGM is attractive for export programs.

How Truck Batteries Ship

  • Sea freight — the standard method for bulk battery exports, governed by the IMDG Code
  • Packing — batteries are secured against short circuits and movement, with terminals protected
  • Documentation — commercial invoice, packing list, MSDS, and a dangerous-goods declaration where required

What to Prepare Before Shipping

  1. Correct UN classification — confirm whether the battery is UN2794 or UN2800
  2. MSDS — a current Material Safety Data Sheet for the battery
  3. Packing — secure against short circuit and movement
  4. Destination rules — some countries have additional import requirements
